LANSING - A local lawmaker wants more action on preventing breast cancer.

Democratic State Representative Winnie Brinks is pushing House Bill 5038. The legislation would require primary care physicians to refer high risk women to genetics counselors.

"Mammograms are great tools, but they have limitations and we want to help women determine what is the best test for them. And sometimes you can't figure that out unless you look at a women's genes," says Brinks.

Brinks has had some success when it comes to breast cancer legislation. In 2015 she helped to get the Dense Breast bill passed.

House Bill 5038 will now need to get through the Committee on Health Policy. Brinks is hoping to get significant action on the bill in 2019.
