LANSING — Two weeks ago, Attorney General Bill Schuette joined 10 other states in filing a brief signaling their support of the president in a lawsuit against his administration due to its refusal to allow immigrant young women to access abortion procedures for unwanted pregnancies while in federal custody. Yesterday, the Progressive Women’s Caucus sent him a letter urging him to withdraw his support. On behalf of the PWC, chairwoman and state Rep. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“In their efforts to pursue the American Dream, the women who travel here risk their lives and often face dangers many of us could never imagine. Many report being sexually abused or assaulted in their home countries, during their journey to the U.S., or even after arriving on our shores. Michigan’s support in these lawsuits is not only an inappropriate use of our state’s taxpayer dollars, but it represents a callous disregard and disrespect for the law of the land, Roe v. Wade. That is why we are urging Attorney General Bill Schuette to withdraw his support for the presidential administration in this lawsuit.”
