A new proposal in the state house would make sure free feminine care products are available in all public school bathrooms.
State Rep. Vanessa Guerra supports the measure.
“In both middle and high school it's really kind of the formative age for young women, so while they're going through that time if they can have access to tampons or sanitary pads, it will make them more comfortable and obviously we want to do anything we can to promote women's health,” Guerra said.
Most schools have machines where you can buy feminine care products for about a quarter, but sponsors of the bill want to make sure students can get tampons and pads for free.
It's not clear yet how the feminine products would be funded.
But Guerra said should come from the state and not the schools.
“One thing that I would support is it being funded at the state level because I think it'd be difficult for schools to do more than what they're already doing," Guerra said.
Carol Selby is the superintendent at Bridgeport Schools.
She said so far she hasn't heard of any problems with students not having access to tampons.
"If someone thinks that it is necessary and it is needed for some our students than sure I guess I'd be in favor of it," Selby said.
Selby said in the meantime some companies and organizations might work with schools to provide feminine care products for free.
“When I was an elementary principal we would always get huge boxes of famine products so if those kind of companies knew there was a need they might step up to the plate and help out,” Selby said.
